Week 3 EOC : Rolling Stone Magazine


Rolling Stone Magazine

Jann S. Wenner dropped out of college in 1967 from the University of California Berkley. He wanted to start a rock music magazine.  He then borrowed $7,500 from his friends and family to get his magazine off the ground. November 9, 1967 was the first issue cover date. Wenner wrote what his magazine was, "is not just about the music, but about the things and attitudes that music embraces."

In the 1970’s Rolling Stone begin to add political coverage. Hunter S. Thompson was incharge of the pollitical section until his death in 2005. Rolling Stone has helped launched many careers: Cameron Crowe,  Lester Bangs, Joe Klein, Jow Eszterhas, Patti Smith, and P.J. O’Rourke. In the 1980’s the magazine begin to shift as “Entertainment” magazine with increasing coverage on movies, television, and celebrities. The prined format has been through several changes.

Today The Rolling Stone is for seen a pop culture magazine.  The Magazine is a bi-weekle magazine targeted towards the younger, educated demographic. The magazine has long articles to read that are 5-7 pages.  The magazine is ment for people who enjoy reading.

The magazine has won 14 National Magazine Awards for General Excellence, Design, Photography, Visual Excellence, Specialized Journalism, Feature Writing, and Reporting. Today, Rolling Stone continues to reign at the forefront of American journalism, and with 12 million readers it serves as the ultimate source for music information and popular-culture trends. the magazine’s success has proved a new readership is always ready to respond to definitive music coverage, provocative interviews, and important investigative and political reporting. Rollin Stone continues to stay fresh and dynamic as Jann S. Wenner’s commitment has been.

EOC 1: How to make it in America

How to make it in America: In the series "How to make  it in America" the characters Ben and Cam are perusing to be entrepreneurs.  In trying to achieve in all this they are taking the wrong steps. Although one positive quality they have is confidence behind them. Too maybe it's too much confidence they have. Ben and Cam are just jumping to he first opportunity they see to get into.  They want to peruse a jean company and design jeans. They haven't done any research behind the product or figure out all the whistles and bells. Alo some history behind the two characters, they already have one failed buisness. You think they would know by now that entrepreneurship does not happen with overnight success but that is what the two are hoping to achieve. Ben an Cam need to put in way more research to their upcoming buisness. It's easy money they are thriving for and think this is the answer. They need more investing than just in the material for the jeans.

Week 2 EOC: John Varvatos


S.W.O.T analysis of John Varvatos

John Varvatos was born in Detroit Michigan.  He started off with Polo Ralph Lauren in 1983 then Calvin Klein in 1990. In 1995 Varvatos moved back to Polo Ralph Lauren and launched the Polo Jeans Company. The year 2000 is when he debuted his first own clothing line under his own name. Converse in 2001 then gave him a license to create high end converse. Varvatos then partnered up with Shiseido and started a fragrance line and skin care products for men.

S.W.O.T analysis

Strengths- Some strengths with John Varvatos is that he has partnered up with some well known names including Polo Ralph Lauren, Converse, and Shiseido.  He also has multiple products in line: Men’s clothing, Men’s Shoes, Men’s fragrance, Men’s accessories, Men’s Bags, and Boy’s clothing. Also he has now partnered up with Chrysler 300 in designing the interior of their cars.  Advertising campaigns are strong for advertising.

Weaknesses-  Strengths of John Varvatos include only being a target for men.  Many items are sold for discounted prices, a lot of sales.

Opportunities-  Opportunities for John Varvatos include the collaborations with designing in well known brands. He does has the opportunity to continue to grow as he is doing now.

Threats-  There are some threats to John Varvatos and or company. Threats including only being marketable for men.  Other designers making replica and selling cheaper or more expensive.
