Week 3 EOC : Rolling Stone Magazine


Rolling Stone Magazine

Jann S. Wenner dropped out of college in 1967 from the University of California Berkley. He wanted to start a rock music magazine.  He then borrowed $7,500 from his friends and family to get his magazine off the ground. November 9, 1967 was the first issue cover date. Wenner wrote what his magazine was, "is not just about the music, but about the things and attitudes that music embraces."

In the 1970’s Rolling Stone begin to add political coverage. Hunter S. Thompson was incharge of the pollitical section until his death in 2005. Rolling Stone has helped launched many careers: Cameron Crowe,  Lester Bangs, Joe Klein, Jow Eszterhas, Patti Smith, and P.J. O’Rourke. In the 1980’s the magazine begin to shift as “Entertainment” magazine with increasing coverage on movies, television, and celebrities. The prined format has been through several changes.

Today The Rolling Stone is for seen a pop culture magazine.  The Magazine is a bi-weekle magazine targeted towards the younger, educated demographic. The magazine has long articles to read that are 5-7 pages.  The magazine is ment for people who enjoy reading.

The magazine has won 14 National Magazine Awards for General Excellence, Design, Photography, Visual Excellence, Specialized Journalism, Feature Writing, and Reporting. Today, Rolling Stone continues to reign at the forefront of American journalism, and with 12 million readers it serves as the ultimate source for music information and popular-culture trends. the magazine’s success has proved a new readership is always ready to respond to definitive music coverage, provocative interviews, and important investigative and political reporting. Rollin Stone continues to stay fresh and dynamic as Jann S. Wenner’s commitment has been.
