week 6 EOC: Rocky Ford

Rocky Ford recently got themselves in a crisis with their company.  From eating Rocky Ford Cantaloupes, 33 people have died and many more sickened.  The cantaloupes were contaminated with listeria.  This has been one of the worst foodborne outbreaks in U.S. history.  The tainted fruit came from a farm 90 miles away, but Rocky Ford farmers had never trademarked their local name and couldn’t keep others from using it. That had never been a problem until 2011. Now Rocky Ford has trade marked their name to legally protect themselves.

Farmer’s surveys found out that many people don’t wash their cantaloupes before eating.  I think Rocky Ford should’ve pointed that out or put a blame on that.  This statement makes it look like the company is blaming others for the mistake.  Rocky Ford should be sincere and take the full responsibility just as Tylenol did in 1982.  Tylenol took full responsibility even though it wasn’t their fault.

Rocky Ford needs to find a great team for public relations to put a good word back out for them.  To get the brand out and recovered to how it was they needed to act quickly.  Explain to the public why this has happened and why this can not happen again.

They were right to get all new equipment for the farm.  They need to show they are really putting gin the effort to be clean and safe.  They need to get more people to talk about that they still buy the cantaloupes and get the word out that they are okay.  “The whole community is very proud of the cantaloupe. The Rocky Ford high school mascot is the ‘Meloneer,’” says Mike Hirakata, a fourth generation melon grower here, “very proud to be Meloneers.”
